What Happens If Your Utah Medical Cannabis Card Expires?
If your Utah medical cannabis card has expired — or is about to — you probably have questions. Can you still buy from a pharmacy? Do you have to start the whole process over? How quickly can you get back in good standing?
The good news: an expired card is not a big deal to fix. Here's exactly what happens when your Utah medical cannabis card expires and how to get back on track quickly.
The Short Answer
Once your Utah medical cannabis card expires, you can no longer legally purchase medical cannabis from a Utah pharmacy until you renew it. There is no grace period — the card stops working the day it expires. However, renewing an expired card is straightforward and, in most cases, you can be re-certified the same day you book an appointment.
Can You Still Use an Expired Medical Cannabis Card in Utah?
No. Utah pharmacies are required to verify that your card is active before completing a sale. If your card has expired, the system will flag it and the pharmacy will not be able to fill your order, regardless of how recently it expired.
Attempting to use an expired card to purchase or possess cannabis puts you in the same legal position as someone without a card at all. It is not worth the risk.
Is There a Grace Period for Renewals in Utah?
There is no grace period. Your card is valid through the expiration date listed on it, and then it stops working. This is why it's a good idea to schedule your renewal a few weeks before your card expires — but if you've already missed the date, it's still easy to fix.
Do I Have to Start the Application Process Over?
No. Even if your card has been expired for months — or years — it still counts as a renewal, not a new application. That means:
You do not need to re-register through the Utah Department of Health from scratch
Your Utah ID account stays active
The visit is billed at the renewal rate, not the new patient rate
The Qualified Medical Provider (QMP) only needs to confirm your qualifying condition and complete the re-certification
If your card has been expired for an extended period, your QMP may ask a few additional questions to make sure your qualifying condition is still being managed appropriately, but the process is the same.
How Long Does It Take to Renew an Expired Card?
Once you're certified and your payment is complete, your renewal is updated and available in your EVS account within minutes — you'll get an email letting you know your card is ready. That means you could walk out of your renewal visit and into a Utah cannabis pharmacy the same afternoon. One exception: if your current card is still active when you renew, the new certification won't appear in your account until the day after your existing card expires.
At Cannabis Cards Logan, we have renewal appointments available throughout the week and offer same-day scheduling when openings allow.
What If I Was Certified at a Different Clinic?
It doesn't matter where you got your original card. Utah allows you to renew with any licensed QMP in the state, and there's no penalty for switching clinics. Many patients transfer to us specifically for renewals because our pricing is among the lowest in Cache Valley. One thing to note: if this is your first visit with Cannabis Cards Logan, your initial visit is $175 — even if you were certified at another clinic. Our lower renewal pricing applies once you've been certified with us before.
You won't need to request records from your previous clinic in most cases — your QMP can verify your prior certification through the Utah Electronic Verification System.
How Much Does It Cost to Renew?
If this is your first visit with us, your initial certification is $175 even if you currently hold a card from another clinic; the renewal pricing above is for returning Cannabis Cards Logan patients.
At Cannabis Cards Logan, renewal pricing is:
12-month card: $125 (issued at the QMP's discretion, includes a 6-month follow-up phone call)
6-month card: $100
We accept cash only and do not bill insurance for medical cannabis visits — this is standard across Utah QMP clinics.
How to Renew Your Expired Card
The renewal process is simple:
Book an appointment with a Utah QMP, either online or by phone
Confirm your Utah ID account is still active (it almost always is)
Attend your visit. Most renewal appointments take 15 to 20 minutes
Your renewed card is updated in your EVS account shortly after certification and payment (you'll get an email when it's ready)
Resume purchasing from any licensed Utah cannabis pharmacy
What If I'm Not Sure My Card Has Expired?
You can check the status of your medical cannabis card by logging into the Utah Electronic Verification System. Your card's expiration date is listed in your patient profile.
